Clube Náutico Capibaribe
Although the official date of foundation is April 7th, 1901, the name Clube Náutico Capibaribe was already mentioned in the previous century, when two rival groups of rowers from Recife joined together.
Since 1897, when the rowing gained expression in Recife, with various competitions along the River Capibaribe, there was a movement to create a yacht club. Náutico ever changed its name to Recreio Fluvial, but did not please everyone and came back to be called Clube Náutico Capibaribe.
At the beginning, in 1897, a group of rowing enthusiasts, led by João Victor da Cruz Alfarra, rent boats from the old Lingüeta, coming in short tours to Casa de Banhos do Pina. These trips reached until the neighborhood of Apipucos.
When, after completion of Revolta dos Canudos, people from Recife were prepared to receive troops from Pernambuco commanded by General Artur Costa, a vast program was prepared for the reception of the soldiers. João Alfarra and some of his fellows, by Capibaribe, were charged of preparing the nautical part of the reception, getting a big race scheduled for November 21st, 1897.
This competition sparked the interest of Recife, who felt the need of making other deals in the genre. Rowing began to gain new followers and, in the following year, employees of the stores on Duque de Caxias Street and Rangel Street have formed an association, which they named Clube dos Pimpões. The components of the other group, which had shone in the reception race of Canudos troops cheered them up and there was a series of clashes between the two groups, in 1898, at Casa de Banhos.
At the end of 1898 was agreed the foundation of another company that would bring together the two groups mentioned above and, proposed by João Alfarra, would be called Clube Náutico Capibaribe.
Football has only appeared at the club from 1909 on. Its activities, however, were limited on Sundays, at Santana or Derby’s Field. Before, there was no interest in the game by the staff of Náutico. The new sport was only accepted that there was no infighting.
In 1914, it was created the Recife’s Football League, but Náutico was not part of it. Its players tried to join the other clubs, who had been affiliated. João de Barros, the current América, was the club which most took advantage of the evasion of the players of Náutico. In 1915, however, it was felt the need to create a new entity to guide the city`s football. Then, it was established in this way the Sports League of Pernambuco, which Náutico got affiliated to. With its joining, the players returned. But they managed to be champion after a long time, in 1934, already at the stage of professionalism.
