Clubs
Santa Cruz Futebol Clube
Santa, as it is affectionately called, was created by a group of 11 boys from Recife. The name came from the makeshift field where they played their matches: in the courtyard of the Church of Santa Cruz.
The first official meeting set the name of the new club as Santa Cruz Foot-Ball Club. The colors chosen initially had only the white and black. Later, because equality of colors with Flamengo in the region, Santa switched to red, becoming the Tricolor of Recife.
The first opponent of Santa Cruz was Rio Negro, in the plain of Derby, where it has attracted a big crowd to see the "boys team" play. The team, although accustomed to playing only in the streets, not surprised the field and got an easy victory by a score of 7-0.
After all these years, Santa has become one of the most popular teams in northern Brazil, which holds the second largest stadium in particular of Brazil: the Arruda.
