Vasco da Gama

In 1898, when Rio de Janeiro has not had more than 500,000 inhabitants, rowing was one of the few sports played and had some popular appeal. On Sundays a crowd gathered at the borders of the still unpolluted Guanabara Bay to attend the competitions between clubs.

At the same time, four young rowers, tired of the extensive travels to Niterói, decided to found a college rowing. The idea was to attract the Portuguese clerks, who liked sports, but do not have enough money to enjoy other sports such as, for example, cycling.

On August 21st, 1898, with 62 members, was born the Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama.

Officially, Vasco’s football only appeared years later in 1915. Two years earlier, a combined Portuguese came to Rio at the invitation of Botafogo to play some matches. This initiative was enough to make the portuguese colony started to be organized and founded several clubs such as the Centro Esportivo Português, the Lusitano and the Lusitânia.

Among these, only the latter remained strong, and it was precisely that one which Vasco tried to join. The problem is that an imposition of the Lusitânia was that all members should be Portuguese, which ran counter to the philosophy of Vasco da Gama and the Metropolitan League of Athletic Sports (LMSA). Over time, the club accepted the conditions and from there arose the giant team of Vasco da Gama.

-South American title of Champions Cup of 1948.
-Rio de Janeiro’s State Championship: 1923/24, 1929, 1934, 1936, 1945, 1947, 1949/50, 1952, 1956, 1958, 1970, 1977, 1982, 1987/88, 1992/93/94, 1998 and 2003.
-Taça Guanabara: 1965, 1976/77, 1986/87, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2000 and 2003.
-Rio-São Paulo Tournament: 1958, 1966 and 1999.
-Brazilian Championship: 1974, 1989, 1997 and 2000.
-Copa Libertadores da América: 1998.
-Copa Mercosul: 2000.
-Copa do Brasil: 2011.
